On Tuesday night, for the first time in three years, the NHL Gala was held and the winners of several trophies were announced. The gala was hosted by Kenan Thompson, who also hosted the last presentation of the event in 2019.
The final award to be announced during the show was the Hart Memorial Trophy, which ended up going to Leafs superstar forward Auston Matthews. This was his second award of the night, having also won the Ted Lindsay Trophy. Matthews gave a speech dedicating the award to his father and Thompson returned to close the show.
During his closing remarks, he made a joke that is sure to sting Matthews and his teammates, as well as upset Leafs fans.
"Congratulations to Auston Matthews, it's nice to see the Leafs win something in June."
Thompson's joke immediately went viral on social media after he said it, and it's sure to enrage the Leafs faithful. It's safe to say, though, that it was pretty spot on and other NHL fans will find it quite funny...
