But with another year left on his contract, one wonders what Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton's plans are for him.
It seems that whistleblower Darren Dreger has some ideas on the subject.
As reported by Olivier Paiement of Danslescoulisses.com, Dreger was on TSN 609 Monday morning and said that there are two options for Drouin:
Either Martin St-Louis is back behind the bench and helping him develop his game, or Kent Hughes gets a trade proposal he can't refuse and that means the end of #92 in Montreal.
He will be paid $5.5 million next year, and given the fact that he was unable to make a name for himself under St. Louis, it's logical to think that the Habs organization would like to retain his services, at least for the start of the season.
However, don't be fooled, his value has decreased quite a bit over the last few months. It is unlikely that Kent Hughes will receive a huge offer for his forward and let's not forget that he will be an uncompensated independent player next summer.
But as Dreger mentioned during his speech, the Habs head coach likes to lead and give opportunities to talented players.
If all goes according to plan, Drouin will be back in time for the Habs' training camp. If he returns to form and is able to produce the way he is capable of, the team's management would be in a position to eventually trade him before the trade deadline next year.
Drouin's value could increase dramatically and who knows, the Habs could get the same kind of value they got for Ben Chiarot and Artturi Lehkonen.
