Cole Caufield is not the shadow of himself this year versus everything he displayed when he landed in Montreal last spring. He came in with a lot of adrenaline, which eventually faded, and then he's unable to get back to that state of mind.
Since the launch of this season, he has only sparkled the red light once in 27 games. We are talking about a maverick, who sees players like Jake Evans (4), Ryan Poehling (4), Artturi Lehkonen (4), Mathieu Perreault (3), Michael Pezzetta (2), Alexander Romanov (2) and Kale Clague (2) having more goals than him.
Lukas Vejdemo and Rafael Harvey-Pinard, who played four and three games respectively, have as many goals as Caufield. This is completely abnormal! A natural scorer that does not score is not so useful.
This morning, on 91.9 Sports, Éric Fichaud made the following observation: "Right now, Cole Caufield is not an NHL player."
The former goalkeeper, now an analyst on TVA Sports, is quite right. The short-term future for Caufield is in Laval and nowhere else. For his good, his confidence and his development, it is with the Rocket that he must evolve, period!
