In the last few hours, the Montreal Canadiens organization has released an incredibly interesting video, allowing us to see everything that went on behind the scenes in preparation for the 2022 NHL Draft, and we can even watch the debates that led to the decision to select young Juraj Slafkovsky (with the famous first overall pick).
There are several highlights, including when the Tricolore's draft team discusses which player to select with the first pick.
As our counterparts at HABSolumentFan report, it seems obvious (in the video) that the majority of the scouts had a big crush on Slaf.
Christer Rockstrom, head scout on the European side, mentions in particular (in English), "I don't know Wright but I'm going with Slafkovsky," and then adds, "He's a big horse. I'm going with him."
Nick Bobrov then adds something very interesting: "You know, hockey historians pay attention to what this guy was able to accomplish. At what age. To be at the World Championship at the age of 16 is unprecedented. No one has done that. Not even in the 80s and 70s. And obviously what he's done on the big stages this year is pretty much unprecedented as well. He just has this personality of wanting to take the bull by the horns. He wants to own the moment, the situation."
To see the very interesting discussions from CH executives, see the following video and go to the seven minute mark:
All of this led to a historic moment for the organization, which selected a Slovak with the first overall pick.
