In a press conference immediately following the announcement of the signing of Kirby Dach, Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes announced that he has not completed his preparation for the upcoming season.

His roster is not final.

"General manager Kent Hughes says the team is currently working to try to complete a trade to free up space under the salary cap, but Hughes doesn't want to trade a good player just to get rid of a contract." - Priyanta Emrith

It's amazing how transparent Hughes is, and it really makes a change, from the old regime:

"Ideally Kent Hughes would make another trade by the start of the season to give himself some flexibility, but he won't do it just to get rid of a salary. He could do it in return for a defenseman, a pick or a prospect." - Marc Antoine Godin (The Athletic)

Hughes did mention that he is looking for a defenseman, pick, or prospect. Interesting!

If he wants to free up space on his payroll and solve his forward surplus problem at the same time, you'd think players like Mike Hoffman, Christian Dvorak, or Evgeny Dadonov could bail out.
