While Carey Price is expected to finally make a return to action on Friday night against the New York Islanders, Jake Allen's season suddenly ended last Saturday in Toronto with a groin injury.
Clearly, a similar situation next season could cause headaches for Kent Hughes and management will need to make sure their goaltenders stay healthy, but there are no guarantees on that front.
However, former Habs goaltending coach Stephane Waite believes that the team should start next season with the Price-Allen tandem.
This is Jake Allen's wish and it should be granted. Kent Hughes (who has been very honest so far on this type of issue) mentioned that the goal was to come back next season with a Price-Allen tandem.
He has no intention of trading either of them. At least for now.
As reported by Charles-Alexis Brisebois of Danslescoulisses.com, Waite discussed the goaltending situation with the Habs with Mario Langlois on 98.5 FM and is very comfortable with the idea of keeping both goalies in Montreal to start next season.
Allen has proven this year that he can hold down the fort in the absence of the team's number one goaltender and he would be an insurance policy of sorts in case Price has to be out for an extended period of time once again.
But he also mentioned that he hasn't thrown in the towel on Samuel Montembeault and would like to see Kent Hughes offer him an NHL contract for next season. Waite even admitted that he would take the chance to draft him if the Habs were to trade him to the Laval Rocket.
