The ECHL has announced that it has suspended forward Jacob Panetta for the remainder of the 2021-2022 season, or 38 games, for a racially motivated gesture towards Jordan Subban, younger brother of P.K. and Malcolm.
Here is the gesture in question:
Remember that Panetta had tried to rectify the situation about his gesture. According to him, his intention was to imitate a "body builder", as Tom Wilson of the Washington Capitals had once done, and not to do an imitation of a monkey. We will never know the truth about this story.
This is far from the first time that an incident like this has occurred in the hockey world. Panetta is just following a VERY tasteless "trend". These actions need to stop and the ECHL did the right thing by giving Panetta a severe consequence.
