After his agent publicly declared (on live television) that his client has an interest in the CH, after announcing to the Jets that he will become a free agent in 2024 and after denying a few rumours about him in a press conference, we now learn that Dubois did not tell us everything (at least, according to Aaron Portzline).
You should know that Portzline is a well-known journalist who covers the Columbus Blue Jackets for The Athletic and is a great source (behind several big stories and several scoops). See what he recently revealed here:
Wow! So this is not new and it says (once again) a lot about his interest in the Tricolore.
On the other hand, even if this is obviously what he was hoping for, it would have been far too risky for Kent Hughes, to make a hostile offer to Pierre-Luc Dubois.
It would have been a bad decision, because in order to sign Dubois, Hughes would have had to give the Jets his 2023 first round pick as compensation.
We're talking about a pick that many believe could potentially become a Connor Bedard or another top-5 pick from a very strong draft. The risk was too great.
In the end, Dubois just signed a one-season, $6 million contract with the Winnipeg Jets (he accepted his qualifying offer)
Dubois, a 24-year-old native of Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, had 60 points (28 goals) in 81 games with the Jets in 2021-22. He was drafted third overall in 2016 by the Columbus Blue Jackets and moved from the Jackets to the Jets in January 2021 for Patrik Laine and Jack Roslovic.
