For the very first time since the controversial first-round selection in 2021, Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson has publicly opened up about the decision to draft Logan Mailloux.
A big statement
In an interesting interview with "Montreal Gazette," Molson admitted for the first time that he had really underestimated the impacts of this decision and that he had learned from it.
«I expected there to be a backlash (following the decision to draft Mailloux), but I think I naively underestimated the backlash. I have said publicly that I was very upset, and it is something I have learned a lot from.» - Geoff Molson.
Regarding Mailloux's future with the CH, here's what he had to say:
«He is a good guy who made a big mistake, and we will continue to help him and see how everything turns out. We will continue to work with him.»
He adds that he takes this matter very seriously.
It genuinely sounds like an owner talking about his future player, and all indications are that Mailloux will (fortunately) have every opportunity to become a regular player for the Canadiens.
Let's remember that Mailloux signed his three-year entry-level contract with the Habs last October.
This is a big and important public statement from Molson here.
He admits to having really underestimated the backlash that it would raise in the media and among the fans, a first! (even Justin Trudeau had gotten involved at the time, so big was the controversy)
