Forward Matthew Tkachuk was traded to Florida, and in return, Calgary received: Jonathan Huberdeau, MacKenzie Weegar, Cole Schwindt and a 1st round pick.
A truly major trade!
Also, please note that Tkachuk immediately signed an 8 year contract with the Panthers worth $9.5 million per year.
There is an important element to this trade that should not be overlooked. Quebec forward Jonathan Huberdeau will possibly be a free agent at the end of next season (he will be an unrestricted free agent next summer, unless he re-signs with Calgary)
It seemed obvious that Huberdeau would sign a new contract in Florida, but now that he's in Calgary, could he test free agency? It certainly seems likely.
Interestingly, as my colleague Alex Desrosiers reports, an article about Jonathan Huberdeau from April 2021 resurfaced this morning following his trade to Calgary.
The Quebecer has always wanted to play with the Habs. Huberdeau made this confidence to host Louis Jean and subscribers of the «Club des 10 de la Fondation du CHUM», at the time.
Wow, we are almost starting to believe it. Could we be witnessing a scenario where the Montreal Canadiens finish their rebuild by getting their hands on Pierre-Luc Dubois AND Jonathan Huberdeau?
Would you like to see Huberdeau in Montreal? Do you believe it?
It will be very interesting to watch! Huberdeau, a native of Saint-Jerome, has 115 points in 80 games in 2021-22. He is 29 years old.
In closing, let's mention that the Montreal Canadiens' contracts for Evgenii Dadonov, Paul Byron, Jake Allen and Jonathan Drouin end next summer. Kent Hughes will obviously have the space to make a good offer to Huberdeau, if ever.
