It seems like a long time ago, but let's remember that during the Montreal Canadiens' most recent training camp, the young Owen Beck really impressed, so much so that some even believed he could have caused a surprise by starting the season in the NHL, for a short audition of a few games.
Martin St-Louis had been very complimentary about him.
Drafted 33rd overall by the CH in 2022, Beck has raised expectations considerably since then, thanks to his great play in both directions of the ice.
He dominated in rookie camp, actually excelled in real camp, and is now one of the best all-around players in the OHL.
Anyway, speaking of Beck, check out what former scout Grant McCagg just posted about him:
"An NHL scout told me last night at the 67's game that he thinks Owen Beck could end up being a better pro player than Shane Wright. Time will tell. Two solid NHL prospects." That seems a bit extreme according to some, especially since Wright is a fourth overall pick that could have come out at No. 1, but it says a lot about the potential of young Beck.
He was ranked top-10 on some lists, too.
So now there is an expert, an NHL scout, who actually believes that Beck could become a better professional player than Shane Wright.
Imagine the scenario! It would be a major one for the Habs.
In any case, it seems to confirm that Beck probably should have been a first round pick.
