In August, a few weeks after acquiring him from the Vegas Golden Knights, the Carolina Hurricanes announced this about Max Pacioretty.
"Max Pacioretty will undergo surgery to repair a torn achilles tomorrow in Raleigh. His expected recovery time is a minimum of six months."

So that put him in a position to possibly return to action in March, and his season was even possibly over (before it could start)
This was obviously a very hard blow for the 33-year-old forward as well as the Hurricanes. Pacioretty had 37 points in 39 games (19 goals) last season with the Vegas Golden Knights.
He was acquired by Carolina on July 13 for future considerations.
Drama in the making?
In the last few minutes, Carolina reporter Cory Lavalette just took fans completely by surprise, posting this:

This isn't a regular practice and it obviously doesn't mean Pacioretty will play this week, but it's definitely a major development, an extremely positive sign, and a hint that we could be seeing a huge turnaround in this issue.
Pacioretty could be back in the game much sooner than expected, like a certain Brad Marchand did earlier this season.
More details to follow!
