One of the nice surprises this season for the Habs is defenseman Chris Wideman.

Acquired as a free agent last summer by Marc Bergevin, he had not played in the NHL since the 2018-2019 season, where he played for three different teams that year. He was playing in the KHL last year, and few would have even thought Wideman would earn a spot with the team at the start of the season.

The former GM's gamble paid off as the defenseman is having a great season with 22 points in 55 games and is even being used regularly on the first power play.

And as reported by my colleague Christian Matte of Marqueur.com, La Presse journalist Mathias Brunet mentioned that he wouldn't be surprised if Kent Hughes offered the Habs defenseman a new contract when he appeared on 91.9 Sports.

"At a reasonable price, I think they're going to want to keep him, from the echoes on the right and left, for another year, depth." - Mathias Brunet

With the team's young prospects on defense, a veteran like Wideman could bring an interesting dimension and since he might not cost too much, why not retain his services for a season or two while the likes of Justin Barron, Jordan Harris and Kaiden Guhle get some playing time.
