When Patrick Roy took the gamble of returning to the QMJHL after three seasons as head coach of the Colorado Avalanche, many hockey fans wondered what his intention was in returning to junior hockey.
After leading the Quebec Remparts for the first time from 2005 to 2013, Roy is now in his second stint with the Red Devils since 2018-2019 and let's just say that the team's fans are very happy to have his services.
This year, his team won the Jean Rougeau Trophy, awarded to the best regular season team in the QMJHL, and now the Remparts' head coach and general manager has just won an individual honor.
Patrick Roy of the Remparts is the #QMJHL general manager of the year. It's his first individual award since joining the league as an executive.
- GM from 2003 to 2013 and from 2018 to 2022
- Head coach from 2005 to 2013 and from 2018 to 2022" - Mikaël Lalancette
His efforts are finally rewarded and in a brilliant way!
Roy thus gets his hands on the Maurice-Filion trophy, awarded annually to the general manager of the year.
The Courteau Circuit made the announcement on Tuesday.
In addition to the Remparts' GM and head coach, the other executives in the running were Jim Hulton of the Charlottetown Islanders and Stéphane Julien of the Sherbrooke Phoenix.
All three men have shown great building skills by drafting and trading for several key players on their respective rosters while all three teams are still in QMJHL playoff action.
Roy has led the Remparts to an impressive 51-15-2 record and his team is currently playing the Rimouski Oceanic in their second round series. The team's goal is simple, to play in the Memorial Cup tournament in St. John next June.
The Maurice Fillion Trophy has been awarded since the 2005-2006 season and was named in honor of the former Remparts coach, who led the team between 1969 and 1972, the golden years of a certain Guy Lafleur.
