According to what insider Pierre LeBrun reported, the Dallas Stars could be interested in the services of defenseman Jeff Petry.

The rumor machine was set in motion a few days ago, when it was reported that Petry would have requested a trade to the Tricolore.

But why would the Stars be interested?

A certain John Klingberg has asked the Stars for a trade, as he is on track to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the current campaign. If Jeff Petry were to end up in Dallas, Klingberg would have to be sent elsewhere, according to LeBrun.

Petry would be the replacement for the Swedish defenseman in Texas.

Recall that Petry has three more seasons on his contract after the 2021-2022 campaign, worth $6.25 million. Despite this, teams are knocking on Kent Hughes' door to try to acquire the services of the 34-year-old veteran.

Let's talk! In an ideal world, John Klingberg would have to be part of a potential deal involving Jeff Petry. However, Klingberg would have to sign a generous contract extension with the Habs for such a move to be possible in my opinion. After all, Montreal won't let their best defenseman go for a rental player...

It would be too risky.
