Despite a difficult season for the players in front of him, Samuel Montembeault is having the best campaign of his young career. His 0.912 GAA and 2.89 goals-against average are proof of that.
We can say that the absence of Carey Price has allowed everyone to finally see the real Samuel Montembeault. In a recent article by Anthony Martineau of TVA Sports, the goaltender opened up on nine topics, including Carey Price.
"What I found most impressive was when he returned to the ice last year after several months away. I was third goalie on the club at the time, so I could watch him from the corner of the rink during practice." - Samuel Montembeault
Not only does he have great respect for the veteran goalie, but he is even more impressed to see that this respect is shared by all his teammates.
"No player on the team wanted to shoot high! I remember Mathieu Perreault coming up to me after a drill and saying, "Sam, I'm totally impressed to shoot against him. I don't want to shoot high. The respect the players had for Carey really stood out to me." - Samuel Montembeault
Wow! We knew Carey was highly respected by his teammates, but this much is a surprise.
It's almost unheard of.
Montembeault said he would love to take over from Price as the club's number one goalie. It would be a dream come true to follow in the footsteps of 31!
Interestingly, the young goaltender is not shy about saying that he likes the consistency of the players in front of him but would like to see them take fewer penalties. The CH is the 4th most penalized team with 411 penalty minutes, 125 of which are minor penalties.
Regarding the next trade deadline, Montembeault had only one request to his GM. It would be surprising if it came true...
This period is not obvious. These are always difficult times. Obviously, I would like Kent to keep all the guys in Montreal! It's never easy to see guys leave, especially those who have been here a long time. But whatever management's plan is, it will be up to us to adjust." - Samuel Montembeault
