Let's face it, the situation of the Arizona Coyotes is pathetic. In addition to having to play on a university ice rink with about 5,000 seats, the organization is being denied one after the other the permissions to build a new amphitheater.

This week, the franchise owner, Alex Meruelo, stated in a press release that he has signed a letter of intent to purchase a plot of land in Mesa, Arizona, which will be the potential site of a sports arena and an entertainment district. If everything works as it should (allow me to doubt it), the Coyotes could move into their new home for the 2026-2027 season.

One fact that stands out in this story is the situation of this future arena. Indeed, Mesa is located even further than Tempe, where the Coyotes currently play. The Yotes' future adopted city is 30KM from Phoenix. As the Twitter account @CANSportbetting reminds us, it's as if the Canadiens played in Blainville or on Île-Perrot.

"The Coyotes playing in Mesa would be like:
- The Leafs playing in King City, Oakville, or Pickering
- The Habs playing in Blainville or on Île-Perrot
- The Canucks playing in South Surrey or Point Roberts
- The Senators abandoning their plans in downtown Ottawa and going to Stittsville."

One has to wonder if moving in this way will be a win for the organization or not. While many criticize this idea, others think that getting closer to the team's fan base will have a real advantage. Furthermore, the Mesa area seems to be experiencing a resurgence in popularity as the population, which is 500,000 people, continues to grow.
