Some players have integrated perfectly while others have been victims of congestion, especially among the defensemen. Among those who have been affected by the numerous additions of the last few weeks, there is a certain William Lagesson.
We are talking about the young defenseman acquired in the transaction that sent Brett Kulak to the Edmonton Oilers on March 21.
Complete trade: Brett Kulak for a second round pick, another seventh round pick and just that, the defenseman Lagesson.
However, with the emergence of Jordan Harris, Justin Barron and Corey Schueneman (in addition to the good performances of Chris Wideman), Lagesson only played one game in the Montreal Canadiens uniform. Martin St. Louis has had some tough choices to make recently, especially with his back end, and Lagesson has been dealt a blow.
We can understand St. Louis, the young Harris, Barron and Schueneman deserve to play, and Wideman too. However, Lagesson's non-use will have an impact.
As my colleague Christian Matte (Marqueur.com) reports, his contract status has changed recently.
When the CH acquired him, Lagesson was going to become a restricted free agent (RFA). This meant that the CH would easily retain his services. (for the NHL or for the AHL)
However, now, since he didn't play enough games with Montreal, there has been a reversal of fortune.
The 26 year old defenseman will now be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. (UFA) He will be free as a bird and the Habs will probably lose him "for nothing". It's not the end of the world, I don't think he belongs in Montreal, in the long run, with all the young guys coming up, but it's still good to know.
The explanation on the subject is here, via Cap Friendly.
Still, the feedback received for Kulak (in the exchange) remains excellent.
