In the last few seconds, Montreal Canadiens defenseman Chris Wideman was in a press conference. He made a few statements that were absolutely sensational to hear for his fans, teammates and bosses.
Here are a few examples:
"Chris Wideman, on what he said to his wife on his last night in Montreal, after the season ended and after a night out with teammates "if we can find a way back, this is where I belong and nowhere else... ." - Priyanta Emrith
"Chris Wideman says he knows his jersey will never hang in the heights of the Bell Centre someday (that his number will never be retired), but he sees the signing of his two-year contract as an opportunity for him to help leave the organization in a better place than where it was when he arrived, on and off the ice." - Priyanta Emrith
Wow!
Finally, he delivered a powerful message to fans. He was asked if he somehow made it difficult for his agent by touting Montreal too much and being too clear that he absolutely wanted to come back here, at all costs.
Did he leave money on the table because Kent Hughes knew too well that Wideman would accept "anything" to stay in Montreal?
Wideman basically said that it doesn't matter to him and that he is extremely happy to have signed with the Tricolore (especially for two years, he added).
Let's remember that he will earn close to the NHL minimum wage, at $762,500/year. He probably could have gotten considerably more on the free agent market, but he absolutely wanted to play for the CH.
