The Montreal Canadiens fell to the Utah team on Tuesday night, and let's just say it wasn't the best officiated game in NHL history.

After the game, veteran defenseman David Savard shared what happened late in the second period, which also led to his 10-minute penalty.

David Savard had a lot to say after the Montreal Canadiens' game against Utah

While carefully choosing his words to avoid trouble, Savard said this.

David Savard says he found out he was assessed a 10 minute misconduct when he came out for the start of the 3rd period:

I was surprised. Obviously I've had way worse [interactions with refs] in my years. It is what it is; he makes the call and I have nothing to say."

"Like I said I think I've had worse in the past; it's a game of emotion and we've had some back-and-forth with some refs in the past and it was fine - I guess it wasn't [fine] tonight."

David Savard was also asked if he was ever given a 10-minute misconduct penalty before and here's his answer:

"I think I had one in Detroit, I wonder if it was the same ref..? Maybe, I don't know, I can't remember.»

Wow, he didn't even know about it!

He was hit with the unpleasant surprise upon returning to the Canadiens' bench at the start of the third period, and let's just say that's a pretty rare sight.

Another truly bizarre decision by the referees last night.

In any case, it's a very strange situation, and it's the cherry on top of a rather tough night for the referees officiating Tuesday night's game at the Bell Centre.

Personally, I've never seen this before... A player learning about a penalty upon returning to the bench at the start of a period. A 10-minute penalty, no less!
