Over the past few days, a major rumor has surfaced regarding Carter Hart and the Philadelphia Flyers.

The rumor suggests that Hart may be available on the trading market, which would obviously be huge news because he is one of the best young goalies in the world with tremendous potential.

The rumor has now been confirmed by renowned sports reporter Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, who reported that "Carter Hart will be available for trade this summer."

This is a big deal.

Now that we know this, it's hard not to think that Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton will be interested.

It doesn't mean that Carter Hart will be traded to the Montreal Canadiens, but Hughes and Gorton will certainly inquire about the price.

Despite the emergence of goalie Samuel Montembeault for the Canadiens this season, most experts agree on one thing.

One of the biggest needs for the Habs right now, to advance their rebuilding process, is to add a young future number one goalie, a young goalie with the potential to be among the top 5 in the world, to eventually replace Carey Price.

It may sound audacious, but Carter Hart truly has the potential to be a Carey Price, or close to it.

Make no mistake. Montembeault is impressive this season, but Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton cannot afford to put all their eggs in his basket, and they cannot rely on Samuel becoming one of the top 5 goalies in the world.

If they think long term, they need a goalie capable of winning a Stanley Cup.

If we go back to Elliotte Friedman's comments, he added this:

"The Flyers love their young goalie Samuel Ersson."

This could explain the unexpected availability of Hart.

In short, this is a major story to follow, and it would be a really big deal if Carter Hart were to be traded.

Hart, 24, has already played 194 career games (79 wins). He was phenomenal in his rookie season, with a save percentage of .917, but it has slightly declined since then (currently .906 this season).

He earns just under $4 million per season and is signed for just over one more year.

Once again, we emphasize that this is not a rumor linking Hart to the Montreal Canadiens, but considering the current needs of the club, and considering that he is available on the trade market, it will certainly be an option to explore for Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton.
