With the Toronto Maple Leafs, several hot topics will undoubtedly make the headlines in the coming months, but the one likely to be the most publicized is Auston Matthews' next contract.
As we know, the American forward will play his final contract year in 2023-2024, and there's already talk of a contract extension.
However, it's the potential future amount that Matthews could earn that is causing a stir, there seems to be some new and big news!
According to the excellent Sportsnet insider Nick Kypreos, there has been progress in this case and he stated on Fan 590 that some sources would have revealed that the Leafs and Matthews' camp are close to an agreement.
And according to Kypreos, the amount of the annual salary would have been revealed and we're talking here about $13.5 million, per season.
With this annual salary, he would thus become the highest paid player in the NHL ahead of Nathan MacKinnon at $12.6 million and Connor McDavid at $12.5 million.
No less.
However, the duration of the agreement would not be known and, for now, there is little information on this case but, one thing is for sure, the financial future of the Leafs' number 34 is secured for a very long time.
If he signs for 8 seasons, we would be talking about a pact with a total value of $108 million. Wow!
