In a recent appearance on Jeff Marek's show, Elliotte Friedman added to the discussion. According to his comments, the process could be expedited, as Dubois could be a member of the Habs as early as this summer. The renowned insider claims that Kent Hughes and his counterpart with the Jets, Kevin Cheveldayoff, have discussed Dubois several times this season.
This is a major development. According to one of the most reputable insiders, the Jets and the Habs have had real discussions about completing a trade involving Pierre-Luc Dubois.
Based on Friedman's words, it seems that discussions could even be resumed this summer:
Acquiring the Quebecois forward this summer would make more sense for both parties than at the last trade deadline. The Jets are fighting for a playoff spot, and giving up Dubois, who is a valuable asset to the team, by trading him to the Habs would be illogical. A trade at the draft would make much more sense, as both sides would then have the rest of the summer to adjust their lineup for the upcoming season.
Dubois, who will be a restricted free agent this summer, is making a salary of $6 million this season. The team that holds his rights will therefore have to make him a qualifying offer of the same amount. By accepting this one-year qualifying offer, Dubois will become an unrestricted free agent the following summer.
Hughes' ultimate goal would be to acquire Dubois before he accepts the qualifying offer. That way, he could offer him a multi-year contract upon acquisition, similar to what Marc Bergevin did with Jonathan Drouin in 2017.
This is a story to follow closely!
