Everyone was surprised to see how Monahan was progressing within the organization. He had even become, at one point in the season, a key piece of Martin St-Louis' lineup. While many were already thinking about the pick he was going to give the Habs at the next trade deadline, others absolutely wanted to see him sign with the club for the next season.
As we all know, a foot injury followed by a mysterious groin injury cost him the end of the season. He ultimately played only 25 games in the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge uniform during which he accumulated 17 points.
The 28-year-old forward will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st and it is certain that league teams will be interested. However, it seems that Kent Hughes might take advantage of the fact that he is still a Hab to keep him in the organization soon.
Indeed, according to what Chris Johnston reports, discussions about a contract extension have taken place between the two parties. Wow!
A return of the veteran would be a big plus for the organization that is in full reconstruction. We saw it when he was in the lineup, Monahan is a very good leader, both on and off the ice. He could very well help, for one more year, Nick Suzuki in the locker room.
During his press conference on the sidelines of the NHL Combine, Kent Hughes even mentioned that he did not tell any upcoming unrestricted free agent from the club that they would not be coming back with the club. This therefore means that Jonathan Drouin, Alex Belzile, Chris Tierney and of course Sean Monahan, among others, could all be back with the Habs next season.
