As you know and as we reported in June, there was a big rumor circulating in the NHL that the Nashville Preds had made a major trade offer to Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens involving the possible future star goalie Yaroslav Askarov.
Well, it's just been confirmed. Wow!
In addition to Cutter Gauthier, Hughes therefore received another trade offer for his 5th overall pick (used to draft David Reinbacher).
See what Nashville offered Montreal on the draft floor. It's now confirmed and official.
The draft was in Nashville and they wanted to make a "splash", but without success because the Canadiens refused the offer.
Askarov (11th overall pick in 2020) would therefore have been obtained by the Habs in exchange for a drop of 10 ranks in the draft.
Personally, we would have accepted! And you?
Askarov, 21 years old, is a 6-foot-4 goalie who is crushing it in the AHL this season. (record of 12-6-1, average of 1.99 and efficiency of 0.928)
Imagine a Montembeault/Askarov duo for the next few years, how solid that would have been! In short, it was refused.
The story does not say who was targeted by Nashville at the 5th rank, probably David Reinbacher according to Arpon Basu, but the 15th overall pick finally went to Matthew Wood. (14 points in 20 games this season in the NCAA)
Names like Axel Sandin-Pellika, Quentin Musty, and Gabriel Perreault were however available.
See at the bottom the podcast in which journalist Arpon Basu of The Athletic confirms that this offer was indeed on the table for Kent Hughes.
