But for others, it could very well be that the Leafs management might have to sacrifice one of the four tenors in a potential trade. The four tenors in question are, of course, John Tavares, William Nylander, Auston Matthews, and Mitch Marner.
If, for many hockey fans in Toronto, Matthews is the most likely to leave the organization in the short term, Mitch Marner's name has been put forward by some experts, including the renowned Pierre LeBrun, for a possible transaction and as reported by Alexandre Desrosiers of the site Rumeursdetransaction.com, three interesting proposals have been suggested by a Toronto blog.
On the site Editor in Leaf, blogger Stephen Nixon came up with three scenarios involving the Maple Leafs' number 16 in a significant trade.
First in the first proposal, Marner would go with the Winnipeg Jets in return for Mark Scheifele, Adam Lowry, and the Jets' first-round pick this year, the 18th overall.
As for the second scenario, it's a one-for-one trade sending Mitch Marner to the San Jose Sharks for star defenseman Erik Karlsson.
Finally, a transaction involving the Columbus Blue Jackets would send Marner to Ohio in return for forwards Patrik Laine and Boone Jenner as well as the 22nd overall pick in the upcoming draft.
All this sounds very interesting on paper but in reality, it's a lot more complicated than we think.
Even if these proposals involve established players, there are still two seasons left on Marner's contract at nearly $11 million per year and Kyle Dubas's successor in Toronto will have to find a team, not only interested in welcoming Marner, but also with cap space.
However, even though I doubt Marner will be traded during the summer, there should be some interesting changes within the Maple Leafs organization during the off-season, starting with finding a new general manager.
