Elliotte Friedman announces that a trade is on the verge of happening to bring Patrik Laine to Montreal

We have news regarding a trade involving Patrik Laine and the Montreal Canadiens.

The renowned Elliotte Friedman from Sportsnet just mentioned that there is traction between the Montreal Canadiens and the Columbus Blue Jackets today!

Usually, when he posts something like this, it means a trade announcement is coming soon after. Wow!

The trade is now official as the Canadiens send Jordan Harris to Columbus and receive Patrik Laine and a 2026 second round pick.

According to several sources, there is no salary retention in this trade, so Patrik Laine will be paid $8.7 million per year by the Montreal Canadiens for the next two seasons.

Here is the official statement from the Canadiens:

Montreal Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes announced on Monday that the team has acquired forward Patrik Laine and a second-round pick in 2026 from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for defenseman Jordan Harris.

Laine, 26, registered nine points (six goals, three assists) in 18 games with Columbus last season. The 6-foot-5, 215 lb right-handed winger has appeared in 480 regular season games over eight NHL seasons with the Winnipeg Jets and the Blue Jackets, tallying 204 goals and 184 assists. The Tampere, FIN native was drafted second overall by the Jets in 2016.

On the international stage, Laine helped Finland win the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championship with 13 points (seven goals, six assists) in seven games, in addition to being named to the tournament's All-Star Team.

Patrik Laine, 26 years old, 6 feet 5 inches tall, and 215 pounds, was the second overall pick in 2016.

He recorded 9 points in 18 games in the 2023-24 season and 52 points in 55 games the previous season.

Patrik Laine also has a respectable 117 points in his last 129 games.

Let's also remember his absolutely phenomenal first two seasons in the NHL, during which he scored 36 goals (at 18 years old) and 44 goals (at 19 years old).
