Many directly linked him to the Montreal Canadiens, with Kent Hughes openly mentioning his desire to acquire offensive talent.
In the end, Zegras is still a Duck, and Kent Hughes ended up acquiring another offensive forward, Patrik Laine. However, according to the recent comments by the excellent hockey insider Elliotte Friedman, the Canadiens did indeed look towards Anaheim.
In the latest edition of the popular podcast 32 Thoughts, Friedman discussed the Canadiens' interest in Zegras.
He stated, however, that with Laine's arrival, there is now little chance that the American will join his friend Cole Caufield in Montreal.
According to information from Marco Normandin of the site HabsolumentFan, a trade involving Zegras and the Canadiens fell through at the last draft.
It included the Ducks' forward and a 2nd-round pick in exchange for Logan Mailloux and the 21st overall pick.
It is understood that Kent Hughes preferred to select Michael Hage instead of trading his pick (plus Mailloux) to acquire Zegras. In the recent Canadiens documentary about the draft, we even saw Kent Hughes calling a GM to say he wouldn't proceed with the planned trade because his player was available. We can assume here that Hughes was speaking to Pat Verbeek, the Ducks' GM.
Nevertheless, with a few days remaining before the opening of NHL training camps, Zegras is still with the team that drafted him 9th overall in the 2019 draft. Is it just a matter of time? We will surely see soon by how he is utilized on the ice.
