Recently, the excellent Marco Normandin, who works for HABSolumentFan, reported a major scoop.
According to his information, the Montreal Canadiens and the Anaheim Ducks had a deal in place during the 2024 draft in Las Vegas, a deal that would have brought Trevor Zegras to town.
According to his information, the complete trade looked like this:
To Montreal:
Trevor Zegras and the Ducks' 2nd round pick
To Anaheim:
Logan Mailloux and the 21st overall pick
In the end, according to Marco Normandin, it was Kent Hughes who refused the trade and ultimately drafted Michael Hage with the 21st overall pick.
The Ducks eventually acquired the 23rd overall pick a bit later, following the Canadiens' alleged refusal.
This indeed seems to confirm that Anaheim's general manager is willing to trade Trevor Zegras in a deal involving Montreal Canadiens' defenseman Logan Mailloux.
The story does not say if Kent Hughes and Pat Verbeek could resume their discussions, or if it's over for Zegras in Montreal, but let's note that Kent Hughes still has several 2nd round picks + a pick that could be 21st overall (the one from the Florida Panthers, acquired from the Calgary Flames in the Sean Monahan trade).
This is something to keep in mind for those who still hope to see Cole Caufield's best friend arrive in Montreal.
And you, would you trade Logan Mailloux and, say, a 2025 second-round pick to acquire Trevor Zegras?
