A huge piece of news has just dropped in the NHL, courtesy of journalist Pierre LeBrun, and it involves Tampa Bay Lightning forward Steven Stamkos.
From the perspective of the Montreal Canadiens, this is a situation we have been monitoring closely because many analysts believe that Stamkos could sign with the Habs (if he leaves Tampa).
There are obvious connections to be made with Kent Hughes, Martin St-Louis, Vincent Lecavalier, and company.
In short, it has just been confirmed by Pierre LeBrun.

Steven Stamkos will become a free agent: Kent Hughes and Martin St-Louis will be able to talk to him!
«From Stamkos' agent, Don Meehan, who told me about his client:
‘He will be a free agent on July 1.'
It appears that Stamkos will test the free agent market next Monday, unless something changes in Tampa's position.»

Wow. So, a huge name is becoming available.
«The Lightning captain will test the market, according to what Pierre LeBrun has learned.» - BPM Sports
Stamkos, 34, was the 1st overall pick in 2008 and still amassed a very solid 81 points in 79 games this season, including 40 goals.
Yes, he is 34, but he is still one of the best players in the world and he loves hockey.
Knowing that Jeff Gorton has opened the door for the Montreal Canadiens to attempt to make the playoffs as early as next season, and knowing that he has opened the door for the acquisition of a major free agent (like Stamkos will be), do you like this option?
He has always had a special connection with Martin St-Louis, so stay tuned.
