The summer of 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting one for hockey fans and supporters of the Montreal Canadiens.

With an increase in the salary cap, several big names will be available on the unrestricted free-agent market.

Players like Mitch Marner, Mikko Rantanen, John Tavares, Brock Boeser, and Brad Marchand will be free as of July 1st, unless one of them reaches a new contract agreement with their current team.

Among the players expected to draw attention in free agency is Winnipeg Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers, who is on track to have the best offensive season of his career this year.

The Danish forward has collected 48 points in 47 games so far, and the possibility of him landing in Montreal has recently been brought up.

Nikolaj Ehlers once again linked to the Montreal Canadiens by an interesting source

During an appearance on BPM Sports, this time it was Éric Bélanger who stated that he could definitely see Nikolaj Ehlers joining the Montreal Canadiens as a free agent next summer.

If the price and term make sense, I think he could be a great addition to bring speed and grit.

He's a player who could fit on a second or third line when the Canadiens reach their peak.

He still has 501 points in 647 games and is heading toward his sixth season with 25 or more goals.

I like that he has some grit, and I also like that he's a player you can use in all situations.

Bélanger's comments are quite interesting because Ehlers could represent the type of free agent Kent Hughes might bring to Montreal.

A forward capable of playing in the top six and bringing some bite to the offense isn't easy to find.

We're talking about a player who has already had five 25-goal seasons and is on track for a sixth in 2024-2025, adding significant depth to Martin St-Louis' offense.

Additionally, Nikolaj Ehlers is very familiar with Patrik Laine, having played with him for several seasons with the Jets.

Do you think this could be an intriguing acquisition for Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens?

The speedy Ehlers could quickly replace someone like Alex Newhook on the second line, for example.
