We are just over a month away from the NHL trade deadline. As a result, some experts have already released their lists of players who could be on the move by March 7th.
Chris Johnston of The Athletic has published his list of the 32 players most likely to be traded, and two Montreal Canadiens players are included.
They are David Savard, ranked 5th, and Jake Evans, who is in 17th place.
Although some experts claim that Kent Hughes should keep the veteran defenseman, Johnston argues that since the acquisition of Alexandre Carrier, the Quebec-born blueliner is no longer as essential to the team.
David Savard and Jake Evans placed on the trade market by the Canadiens
Here's what he had to say:
«Playing on an expiring contract, the depth center is having a career year at the perfect time.
While the Canadiens like him, his rise could turn him into trade bait rather than someone they want to sign to another contract.»
- Chris Johnston
Savard will become a free agent at the end of the season, and the Canadiens will want to get something in return, especially if Martin St-Louis' team is out of the playoff race by March 7.
As for Jake Evans, the journalist mentions that he could be a great option for a team aiming for a championship and looking for a fourth-line center.
«Evans isn't very big, but he's a fast skater and an effective penalty killer. He would be a quality fourth-line option for a team with championship aspirations.»
- Chris Johnston
His name has recently been linked to the Winnipeg Jets.
Like Savard, Evans will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1, and it will be interesting to see what Kent Hughes decides to do with these two players by then.
Additionally, as reported by insider Pierre LeBrun, the Habs and Evans remain far apart on contract negotiations.
As discussed at intermission during on our Habs TSN broadcast, my understanding is Jake Evans and the Canadiens have exchanged numbers on what an extension might look like and they're not close. Obviously things can change with one phone call, but as of now that makes it more likely Evans gets dealt before the March 7 deadline. Calls from teams asking about Evans have increased lately with the Habs' slide in the standings.
- Pierre Lebrun on Jake Evans
