We suspected it, but LeBrun has just officially confirmed that Kent Hughes contacted the Carolina Hurricanes about Martin Necas.
LeBrun also added that the Canadiens' general manager reconnected with the Anaheim Ducks for a possible trade involving Trevor Zegras.
Clearly, the insider had a good discussion with Kent Hughes, and clearly, he has good information.
Pierre LeBrun is currently in Buffalo, along with other general managers of the National Hockey League, so there's a lot of chatter.
It's no coincidence that the names of Trevor Zegras and Martin Necas are circulating a lot in rumors in Montreal, it's because Kent Hughes is genuinely trying to acquire them via trade.
The two players are in slightly different situations.
Necas is a restricted free agent and is seeking a hefty new contract for 7 or 8 seasons, while Zegras is under contract for two more seasons at $5.75 million per year. (RFA afterward)
Logically, Necas will cost more on the salary cap for the 2024-25 and 2025-26 seasons, whereas Zegras should cost more afterward if he has good seasons.
In their NHL careers, we are talking about 154 points in 211 games for Trevor Zegras, and 243 points in 362 games for Martin Necas.
At an equal price, which one would you prefer?
