The price the Canadiens need to pay to acquire Jake Guentzel is now revealed
The Carolina Hurricanes have just placed Jake Guentzel's name on the NHL trade market, and here's the price Kent Hughes will have to pay.
The Canes were truly hopeful of signing Guentzel long-term, but it's never easy to convince a player who is about to become an unrestricted free agent, allowing him to choose the team and contract of his choice.
Negotiations seem to have failed, and Guentzel is now available.
Jake Guentzel placed on the trade market: Hurricanes demand a simple 1st-round pick in exchange for his services
This means that if Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens want to acquire the rights to Guentzel, they will have to send their 26th overall pick to Carolina.
One would assume that if they do so, it's because they will have assurances to re-sign Guentzel through a contract extension, but this remains to be seen.
Would you pay this price?
«The price to pay? A first-round pick. That's what Elliotte Friedman reports.
It seems that (Jake Guentzel) is available for a first-round pick. I believe Carolina has made it known to everyone that if you want to trade for his rights, for the chance to sign him, it's possible in exchange for a first-round pick.» - Elliotte Friedman
So, a very big name is entering the trade market, but it comes with a significant caveat.
Guentzel, 29, has scored 25 points in 17 games this season with the Carolina Hurricanes, and 52 points in 50 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
In his career, the star forward has accumulated 491 points in 520 games.
More details will follow.
He seems to be underrated, but Guentzel is truly one of the best wingers in the entire National Hockey League.
