Trade involving David Savard: it would happen under one condition according to Eric Engels
Among the storylines to watch with the Canadiens this season, one will be that of David Savard.
The veteran defenseman will be entering the final year of his contract, signed in the summer of 2021, and according to the site Marqueur, there is a possibility that the Quebec native could be traded by Kent Hughes during the season.
As he will become an unrestricted free agent next summer, his value will likely be attractive on the trade market. However, according to Eric Engels, there is a chance Savard may leave Montreal earlier than expected.
A trade earlier than expected for David Savard?
In a recently published article, Sportsnet's insider, who is marking his tenth year covering the Canadiens, mentioned that if young players like Logan Mailloux and David Reinbacher surprise by earning a spot with the big club at the start of the season, the organization could be tempted to part with David Savard.
"As for David Savard, I think if it were up to him, he'd be a Canadien for life.
But even Savard knows he'll be sidelined by younger players who need to gain experience for the team to get to where they eventually want to go.
For that reason-and many others, including his profile as a fearless, tall, and versatile veteran right-handed defenseman-he will be on every trade board this season. Not only is it likely that he will be traded, but it could happen earlier than expected if David Reinbacher and Logan Mailloux have training camps that force the Canadiens to put Savard on the market sooner than they would have anticipated."
In short, David Savard could indeed be traded this season, but only if young players like David Reinbacher and Logan Mailloux earn a spot in the lineup.
If that happens, several teams aiming for a deep playoff run will surely be interested in Savard, who would add depth on defense. It wouldn't be surprising if Kent Hughes could secure a first-round pick in exchange for his veteran defenseman.
As of the latest updates, the Dallas Stars were genuinely interested in Savard, but Kent Hughes must be extremely cautious before trading the veteran defenseman.
He means so much to this team!
