The latter would have decided to test the market of the autonomous players and he will be free as a bird on July 13th. (he would aim for 6 millions per season)
The Leafs will have to find another goalie, one who can win (at least) a playoff round.
In 49 games with Toronto this season, Campbell has maintained a 31-9-6 record, a .914 GAA and a 2.64 goals-against average. (and 5 shutouts) It wasn't enough to go far in the playoffs.
Anyway, now that we know this, a new piece of information has just surfaced.
Leafs GM Kyle Dubas would be tempted to sign Darcy Kuemper or, wait for it, Marc-Andre Fleury.
According to The Athletic, we shouldn't be surprised if the Leafs announce the Fleury signing. The price is likely to be reasonable (considering his past year and age) and Toronto seriously tried to acquire him at the trade deadline.
In the end, the trade fell through, but according to various NHL sources and quoted by The Athletic, Fleury would be up for a move to Toronto, to play behind a competitive team with big-time aspirations.
The reputable trade site Evolving Hockey predicts (for Fleury) a two-year contract and an annual value of 4.7 million per season. Do you think the Leafs should do it?
They seem seriously interested in any case and we shouldn't be surprised if it's announced in a few weeks.
