While the Montreal Canadiens are currently trying to acquire Pierre-Luc Dubois, Dan Kramer, who currently covers the CH's activities for TSN and Habs EOTP, made an interesting statement.
See his argument:
"The only rule the Habs have to abide by - you do NOT trade the first 2023 picks of the #Habs or the Panthers. Period. And certainly not for Dubois.
The thing we have to keep in mind, too, is that the Panthers have virtually no room to add reinforcements. On top of that, they've emptied their bank of prospects and picks, for future trades. So this is their final team.
Honestly, this is not a long-term rebuild. To do it right, you have to wait for ONE more season..."
Basically, he's explaining that the Panthers really don't have that good of a team, going into the 2022-23 season, and they absolutely cannot afford to add any more players. (They have nothing left to trade in terms of prospects and picks) They don't have the space under the salary cap either.
As many have illustrated, their offense is far less scary than last year and their defensive squad is questionable at best.
Check out the result:
Kramer believes that the Panthers' 2023 first-round pick, who has been owned by the Montreal Canadiens since the Ben Chiarot trade, must stay in Montreal.
According to Kramer, Kent Hughes should absolutely not trade this (unprotected) pick because it could be surprisingly high.
Do you agree with him? Do you think Hughes and Jeff Gorton should absolutely keep the 2023 first round pick from Florida?
In any case, this trade Kent Hughes made with the Panthers for Ben Chiarot is becoming a home run!
Remember that Ben Chiarot was traded to the Florida Panthers, by the Habs, a few months ago (just before the 2022 trade deadline) for: a first round pick in 2023 (unprotected), the prospect Ty Smilanic and a fourth round pick in 2022.
