While Montreal fans are looking at the CH's latest first round pick, Juraj Slafkovsky, some observers also have their eye on Shane Wright in Seattle. They want to see how the man who could have been the Habs' pick in the last NHL draft does.
His head coach, Dave Hakstol, was evasive about him, mentioning that beyond his nice goal during intrasquad games, other aspects of his game caught his attention:
"Most people will remember his goal (scored on a sharp, dry shot late in the game) in the intrasquad game, but I remember several other things." - Dave Hakstol
Many saw this comment as a positive, but others saw it as the young man still has a lot of work to do before he reaches the NHL.
To prove it, here's how Wright was welcomed to the NHL this Thursday night by Elias Pettersson. The Swedish forward served the young rookie a cup of coffee before easily walking around him.
This proves that the NHL is at a whole new level of competition and you have to be extremely patient with youngsters. However, you should definitely not rely on one game to get a clear picture of the rookie.
Whether it's Wright, Slafkovsky or any other young player from the last draft, we'll have to wait a long time to really see if the CH made the right choice in the last draft. The fact that one or the other makes the team at the end of camp is also not a valid comparison.
