While still in his home country, Washington Capitals star forward Alex Ovechkin said he will absolutely be there for the start of his team's training camp in a couple of weeks (in case anyone doubted it).
Beyond that, in an interview with a home media outlet, the Caps captain made his intentions clear. He absolutely wants to win another Stanley Cup.
Ovechkin did say that he really wants to win another Stanley Cup, more than anything, and he added that breaking Wayne Gretzky's goal record is not his priority.
Note: the following is translated from Russian.
"For the rest of my career, my goal is to win the Stanley Cup again," Ovechkin told Pavel Lysenkov and Alexander Rogulev of Match TV. "I would like to do exactly that. And our personal records, including this one, we will try. I will try to score, and then we will see."
He added this, "The most important thing is that there are no injuries and the team plays in a way that qualifies for the playoffs. The team's outcome is our number one priority!"
Well said!
Ovechkin, 36, has four more years before his current contract ends. So he will have plenty of time to win another Stanley Cup, but also, possibly to break Wayne Gretzky's record.
Ovechkin currently has 780 career goals (third all-time NHL record). If he wants to break the record, he will need 115 more goals, which averages out to 28.75 goals per season over four seasons.
Do you think he can do it?
