In case you missed the news, the Calgary Flames and Montreal Canadiens reached a deal on Monday that sends forward Tyler Toffoli to the Flames in exchange for forward Tyler Pitlick, prospect Emil Heineman (acquired in the trade of Sam Bennett), a 1st round pick in 2022 (top 10 protected) and a 5th round pick in 2023.

If many are disappointed to see Toffoli leave Montreal, a new information came out about the backstage of this transaction. It seems, according to Martin McGuire, that it was Toffoli himself who asked to be traded...

It also looks like Flames GMs Brad Treliving and Kent Hughes may not be done. Several NHL insiders mention that the Flames would also have a great interest in defenseman Ben Chiarot. They want to acquire him too.

While it's unclear if Chiarot was part of the original deal, we could see the two teams dancing again soon.

As of today, the Flames are out of 2022 1st-round picks but do have two second-round picks. They also have a first-round pick in 2023, but parting with it could be costly given the quality of this draft. So could the Flames be tempted to trade a young prospect instead of a pick? It's quite possible, but on the other hand, maybe Hughes will want to pick his next draft prospect himself.

It will be interesting to see if these teams manage to secure another major deal. This will be a case to follow when Chiarot comes off the injured list...
