Arber Xhekaj surprised many during the training camp. Never drafted in the NHL, the defenseman was able to make his place in the Habs' lineup thanks to his strong play.
The journalist from The Athletic, Marc-Antoine Godin, published an article about the young player's atypical career. He reveals that the Canadiens' interest in Xhekaj dates back to 2020, but that the team had chosen not to draft him.
The hockey player came close to playing for another organization, while the Habs were in a race against another team to acquire him. After the 2021 draft, the Red-White-Blue and the Florida Panthers had mentioned their interest in him. Xhekaj was supposed to go to the Panthers camp, but a call from the Canadiens would have changed everything.
«I was actually going to go to the Florida Panthers camp,» Xhekaj said. «And then I waited, and then Montreal came around.»
Arber Xhekaj must be very happy with his choice and so are the fans.
