On Tuesday morning, a few minutes before the start of the traditional golf tournament, the Montreal Canadiens organization made a big announcement concerning advertising on their jerseys. Starting next season, and for several years to come, the RBC logo will appear on the home jerseys worn by Canadiens players at the Bell Centre.
The big announcement came as a shock to many, who felt that the advertising would distort the CH's beautiful jersey. However, the organization had more than one trick up its sleeve to make up for this news as it announced, a few minutes later, the appointment of Nick Suzuki as the 31st captain in the organization's history.
Some people were not fooled and saw the excellent strategy of the CH which, with this nomination, created a nice media eclipse in order to minimize the extent of the news of the publicity on the jerseys. Former CH content creator Marc Dumont is one of those who saw right through the CH game.
"Announcing Suzuki's appointment shortly after revealing the jersey announcement? That's smart timing."
Did the Montreal Canadiens try to put their controversial announcement behind them? It sure looks like it.
The CH just sort of did what Quebec politicians and other businesses do when there's bad news to be announced, which is to take advantage of its media clout. They announced a good news following the not so good news in order to, in a way, drown the fish.
As for the captaincy, Dumont, who has often been in contact with the players during his time with the CH, confirmed the choice of Suzuki for the position.
"I've said it 100 times before, but Suzuki was the right choice for captain.
Contract aside, he knows exactly what it takes to be a captain in Montreal.
It's more than talking to the refs and leading on the ice. It's also about connecting with the fans. Understanding the market."
Do you, like Marc Dumont, like this appointment?
