The New York Rangers made an important decision for their organization today. They made the choice to not name a captain this year, but instead select a group of assistants, containing six individuals.
The players who will sport an "A" this season are Artemi Panarin, Mika Zibanejad, Jacob Trouba, Chris Kreider, Barclay Goodrow and Ryan Strome.
What is surprising about this decision is that Gerard Gallant had publicly announced that he intended to name a captain before the season started. Obviously, he has changed his mind. Perhaps no one leader in his squad stood out more than another. The sample size was bound to be too small to make a decision.
Recall that the Rangers have not selected a captain since Ryan McDonagh left for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2018.
