On Monday afternoon, Marc Bergevin sent a strong message to his organization by demoting youngster Cole Caufield, who had just one assist in 10 games this season, to the Laval Rocket. As for forward Michael Pezzetta, he went in the opposite direction.

While many analysts and fans welcomed the decision, which is intended to allow the young American to regain his confidence in the minors, others found the situation unfair to the Canadiens' number 22, starting with 98.5 Sports host Jérémie Rainville.

Rainville expressed his displeasure with the personnel move, saying that the Canadiens' rookie was paying for the collective mediocrity shown by the Habs since the beginning of the season.

Specifically targeting the teammates with whom Caufield started the season, Nick Suzuki and Tyler Toffoli, Rainville said that the small forward is not the only player to blame and that the only reason he was traded is because he is the easiest player in the lineup to "pack in".

It's true that because of his rookie status, Caufield can be sent back to the AHL at any time, unlike veterans who are off to just as bad a start as he is, such as Tyler Toffoli, Joel Armia and Brendan Gallagher.

So, what do you think? Did Caufield really deserve to return to the minors? Do you think this decision will have a positive impact on his development?
