As we finish dissecting Kent Hughes' most recent press briefing, we notice that there is a very interesting passage at the very end.
Hughes once again took many observers and fans by surprise with his unparalleled transparency and bluntly revealed that he is currently working to try and construct a new trade that would free up some space on his payroll.
The Habs general manager went even further, and even agreed to name the kind of players he is trying to acquire via trade:
"Ideally, Kent Hughes would make another trade by the start of the season to give himself some flexibility, but he won't do it just to get rid of salary. He could do it in return for a defenseman, a pick or a prospect." - Marc Antoine Godin (The Athletic)
Hughes did indeed clearly mention that he is looking for a defenseman, pick, or prospect. Interesting!
He (again) reiterated that he will do so if, and only if, it makes sense for the Montreal Canadiens organization in the long run.
This is consistent with his speech of the last few months.
Considering the surplus of high-priced forwards, it's logical to think that Kent Hughes is currently trying to trade a forward with a high enough salary, and ideally, he would want (in exchange) a defenseman, a pick or a prospect. To be continued!
Names like Mike Hoffman, Christian Dvorak, Evgeny Dadonov, etc. could possibly be at risk of changing addresses by the start of the season.
More details will follow!
