In addition to the 27-year-old forward, Kent Hughes gets a conditional first round pick in 2025 from the Calgary Flames, all in return for future considerations.
Let's just say that with the signing of Nazem Kadri earlier Thursday, Flames general manager Brad Treliving needed to free up some money on the payroll and with his $6.375 million annual salary, Monahan was on his last miles in Alberta.
It must be said that since his 82-point season in 2018-2019, Monahan's stats have been in freefall, as he had just 23 points, including 8 goals, in 65 games last year and had to undergo hip surgery before the playoffs.
And as Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports, Monahan comes to Montreal with a heavy injury history and that's probably what has slowed him down over the past three seasons.
Despite all the injuries suffered in recent years, will we ever see the forward who has already had three 30-goal seasons in the NHL again?
It's hard to say at this point because we're still a little over a month away from the start of the team's training camp and we don't know if Monahan will be 100% recovered from his hip surgery.
However, it could very well be that the center will only be passing through with the Habs, as he will be entering the last year of his contract this season, but if we ever see a comeback from him, we can say that Kent Hughes will have done a great job in this transaction.
It will also be interesting to see how Martin St-Louis will use him this season, as he has an excellent skating stroke, the kind of player that the Habs' coach particularly likes.
