The team's management has changed a lot in the last few months and even if we can't expect miracles in 2022-2023, we can say that the Canadiens are in good hands with the new staff.
That said, as Marc-Olivier Cook of Danslescoulisses.com reports, Gorton was on TSN 690 earlier this week and he made a statement that not only might surprise Canadiens fans, but also make them very happy.
Gorton mentioned that he was open to the Habs looking for reinforcements at the trade deadline, if Martin St-Louis' team was able to have a good season.
It would indeed be a surprise to see the CH make a trade to improve in the short term, but Gorton is opening the door.
Still, it's a pretty surprising statement, considering that the Habs are in a so-called rebuild. On the other hand, if we remember a few years ago, when Jeff Gorton was the GM of the New York Rangers, he also declared that his team was in a rebuilding process and we know what happened, the team reached the conference finals in 2022.
There is another team that was said to be in rebuilding just recently and that managed to surprise the experts in 2021-2022, the Los Angeles Kings. After three seasons out of the playoffs, the California team came out on top last season and came close to eliminating Connor McDavid in the first round of the playoffs.
Let's just say that it's encouraging to see one of the Canadiens' executives say such things. Gorton also mentioned that he has full confidence in the group of young players that are in place and that the future is promising in Montreal.
