Kent Hughes and the Montreal Canadiens Have Just Made a Clear Statement about Samuel Montembeault's Contract Extension
It was this past Monday, at the beginning of the week, that the Canadiens officially kicked off their 2023-2024 season with their traditional annual golf tournament. It was an opportunity for the players and team executives to reconnect with the public and the media and to hear the organization's objectives for the upcoming season.
Among the players that the fans were eager to see was goaltender Samuel Montembeault, one of the pleasant surprises with the Canadiens last year. As we know, he is in his last contract year and could become a free agent next summer.
When Montembeault met the media for the first time in a few months, he stated that he would have liked to start discussions with the organization during the summer, but for now, it is not one of Kent Hughes' priorities as he would like to resolve the three-goalie situation first.
"We will determine the number of goalkeepers, first. As for the beginning of negotiations, whether it's during or after the season, I will talk to Sam and his agent," said Hughes. "There are some who don't like it [negotiating during the schedule] and prefer to focus on their game. We are not worried.

These are nonetheless encouraging words regarding Montembeault's future with the Canadiens, and he reiterated his desire to sign a new agreement soon and hopes to stay in Montreal.
"I know the Canadiens have a lot of files to settle, so I don't expect to sign [this new contract] at the beginning of the summer. But if it can be done during the training camp or early in the season, like Jake Allen did last year, I would certainly like that. I would like to stay with the Canadiens." With this statement mixed with that of his general manager, the chances that number 35 signs a new agreement with the organization seem quite good, but if he hopes to get an amount that meets his expectations, he will have to shine in front of the Canadiens' net again this season.
