Earlier today, we reported that the New York Rangers have just agreed to terms on an attractive two-season contract worth $2.1 million annually with young forward Kaapo Kakko.
As many analysts are reporting, and it's perfectly legitimate, this news is a bit under the radar among Montreal Canadiens fans, but it's important news because we may have just learned about Kirby Dach's new contract with the Habs.
"Expect the Habs to use this contract as a comparable for Kirby Dach." - Phylippe Bernard
Indeed, comparing the careers of Dach and Kakko, who were drafted back-to-back, one imagines they will have the same salary in 2022-23.
Like Kakko, Dach has been slow to establish himself as an offensive player in the NHL, even though he has immense potential. Both young players have been simply dominant on the international stage (for Finland and Canada), but are slow to make a big impact in the best league in the world.
Dach, 21 years old and 6 feet 4 inches, was drafted 3rd overall in 2019 and has 59 career NHL points (in 152 games).
Kakko, 21, 6-foot-3, was drafted 2nd overall in 2019 and has 58 career NHL points (in 157 games).
This could indeed be a very good comparison for the new Montreal Canadiens forward. Both have very similar careers so far.
Before making it official, however, general manager Kent Hughes (of the CH) will have some work to do, as he only has $248,334 in cap space under the cap, according to CapFriendly.
An issue to keep an eye on!
