Andrei Markov has left his mark on Montreal fans. If he wasn't the most talkative, his exploits on the ice greatly contributed to his popularity. Many were shocked to see that Marc Bergevin literally got rid of him after the 2016-2017 season when he was only 10 games away from reaching the 1000 NHL mark.

The defenseman then decided to return home to Russia to play in the KHL with the Kazan Ak-Bars and the Yaroslavl Lokomotiv. Following his playing career, he moved behind the bench as an assistant coach for Podolsk Vityaz (2021-2022) and Moscow Spartak (2022-2023).

His time behind the Moscow bench will not have been very long, however, because according to what Sport-express.ru reports, Markov has been fired from his position as assistant coach. The latter was responsible for the defensive side with the team. He is replaced by his compatriot and former NHL defenseman Igor Ulanov, who played nearly 800 career games with several teams.

Markov's dismissal comes after Spartak's 7-4 loss to Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg on Tuesday. Spartak currently sits in seventh place in the KHL's Western Conference with a record of 23 wins and 30 losses.

Before Christmas, Chantal Machabée said the original plan with the P.K. Subban tribute night was to also honor Markov. He was unable to accept the offer because of commitments already made, namely his role as coach. The Vice President of Hockey Communications also said that discussions were still open.

With his dismissal, it would not be surprising to see the former defenseman at the Bell Centre sooner than later!

An announcement from the CH is to be watched in this file.
